The Dennis Farm is proud to sponsor a student essay contest in conjunction with The Lonae A. Moore Memorial Forum, “It Begins with Each of Us: Fostering Racial Understanding”

We are thrilled to announce that student attendees to the February 8, 2020 Forum will have the opportunity to earn first, second, and third place cash prizes for writing an essay based on what they’ve learned during the Forum!

How can we generate understanding among people of diverse races, cultures, ethnicities and religions in our individual lives and communities?

Guidelines

Submissions should be between 500-750 words, and no more than two or three pages. Students will have five weeks to prepare and submit their essays following the Forum. To be eligible, students must attend the Forum and sign-in.

The deadline for submissions is midnight Monday, March 16, 2020.

Themes

During the Forum, a panel discussion will bring together experts from across disciplines to address how journalism, literature, the arts and mass media shape and perpetuate our perceptions of race.

This candid conversation about ideas of race as they are expressed through popular culture and news media, we hope, will help foster increased racial understanding, as we become a more diverse, global community. The discussion will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Each essay must address the Forum themes, how journalism, literature, the arts and mass media shape and perpetuate our perceptions of race, and how based on what the student has learned from the Forum, what we as individuals and as a community can do to help foster better understanding among people of diverse races, cultures, ethnicities and religions.

Prizes

First Place is $500
Second Place is $350
Third Place is $250

Our Forum Committee will select the three prize-winning essays, which will be published on the Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust website.
