DENNIS FARM AWARDED GRANT BY THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION

The Dennis Farm has been chosen as a 2020 grant recipient of the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) through its African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. The farm was settled in Brooklyn Township over 225 years ago by a free African American family whose direct descendants have retained stewardship of the property to the present day. NTHP announced more than $1.6 million in grants to 27 sites and organizations across the United States. Only two of the chosen sites, including the Historic Dennis Farm, are located in Pennsylvania.

“We are honored and excited that the National Trust for Historic Preservation has selected The Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust to receive this prestigious grant from NTHP’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund,” said Denise Dennis, Founding President and CEO of The Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust (DFCLT).

She continued, “That we were one of 27 organizations to receive a grant, selected from nearly 600 applicants, confirms the significance of the Dennis Farm as a nationally recognized cultural heritage site. We congratulate our fellow grant recipients throughout the United States, and feel privileged to be in their company. We will apply the grant to restoring the stonewall foundation of the Dennis Farmhouse, the first step toward transforming the farmhouse to a museum.”

Grants awarded through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund are given across four categories: capacity building, project planning, capital, and programming and interpretation, which coincide with the farm’s current restoration campaign to restore and rebuild the 195-year-old Dennis Farmhouse for repurpose as a museum.

DFCLT is responsible for raising $1,200,000 in order to meet a National Endowment for the Humanities matching grant for the farmhouse project, awarded to DFCLT in 2019.
